The Journal of Renal Nutrition was originally abbreviated “JRN.” An obvious, simple, and unique 3-letter pattern. When the Journal was accepted in the Index Medicus, it was assigned an official citation, J Renal Nutr, and the abbreviation became “JREN.” Although this was the new abbreviation for the Journal, the majority (Editorial Board Members included), continued to use the original shorthand, perhaps just out of habit. However, that time has now passed. At the last Council on Renal Nutrition (CRN) Executive Committee Meeting, the “JREN” abbreviation was voted in, and efforts are being made by the CRN to announce to the renal community the correct short format when referring to the Journal of Renal Nutrition.

There are many exciting innovations on the horizon for the Journal. This is in large part as a result of the co-sponsorship of the JREN with the International Society on Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM). We will all soon see an expanded international editorial board, a new cover, and, more pertinently, new contents. Our co-sponsorship with ISRNM will bring to the JREN a wider breadth of topics and scope of both clinical and research papers in renal nutrition. We will be exposed through the Journal pages to renal practices worldwide.

One example will be the publication of selected proceedings from the International Congresses on Renal Nutrition and Metabolism that are held every 2 years in different locations around the world. The 11th Congress was held this past March in Nagoya, Japan. The first effort to publish papers from these Congresses will take place in 2003. At the time of this writing the peer review process has been implemented to review selected papers from the 11th International Congress on Renal Nutrition and Metabolism for publication in JREN next year.

On a different note, thank you to all readers who completed the readership survey that was included in the July 2002 issue of JREN. The results will be tabulated and reported as part of an Editorial during the 2003 publication year. Information gained from this survey will be used in planning future issues of the Journal.

Yes, it is a year ago, when counting by JREN issues, that the world was frozen by the New York City tragedy. To all those whose lives are forever changed, who move on and live life, who continue to practice in the field of kidney disease, a salute to you as you relax and enjoy the contents of the JREN.
