THE PURPOSE OF the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism is to advance the knowledge of nutrition and metabolism in renal disease and renal failure and to foster communication on the advancements of this knowledge by means of scientific meetings and cooperation with other scientific societies of nephrology, nutrition, biochemistry, and physiology. The primary function of the biennial congress is to bring scientists together to explore the special requirements of patients with kidney disease and to present the latest scientific developments in nutrition and metabolism focused on the problems and expectations of patients with kidney disease.
We are delighted to announce that the 12th International Congress on Nutrition and Metabolism in Renal Disease (http://www.nutrition.metabolism-2004.it/) will be held in Venice and Padua, Italy, June 19–22, 2004. On behalf of the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism and the local congress committee, we have the great pleasure to invite you to attend the congress and visit these attractive cities.
The scientific program, hopefully in line with the high scientific standards of the previous congresses, will include plenary lectures, symposia, free communications and posters, and a special program for renal dietitians, and will provide up-to-date information about major advances in nutrition and metabolism and how these advances may influence the care of kidney patients. A large professional exhibition will be available in the congress area.
For the first time, an educational session is planned, discussing the metabolic abnormalities of patients with acute or chronic renal failure on conservative or dialytic treatment, the assessment of their nutritional state, the nutritional requirements and support of these patients, the correction of their anemia, and the practical aspects of the dietary treatment presented by a dietitian.
We welcome the submission of abstracts on all aspects of renal nutrition and metabolism, such as exercise in ESRD; changes of nutritional state and protein metabolism with dialytic procedures; intradialytic nutrition; bioartificial kidney; antioxidant therapy in kidney disease; the elderly with ESRD; nitric oxide pathways in ESRD; amino acid imbalances in kidney diseases; adaptive response to low protein diets in ESRD; cardiovascular risk factors in ESRD (inflammation, glycoxidation, lipid peroxidation, AGEs, homocysteine, endothelial dysfunction, endothelins, lipid abnormalities, etc); quality of life in ESRD; regulation of appetite in ESRD; energy metabolism in renal disease; carnitine, erythropoietin, iron, and vitamins in ESRD; malnutrition (pathogenesis and therapy); intestinal bacteria and nutrition in renal failure; nutrition and catabolic responses in renal failure; phosphate and vitamin D metabolism in ESRD; micronutrients in ESRD; nutrition and progression of renal disease; ketoanalogues in ESRD; diet and blood pressure control in ESRD; and muscle metabolism in renal disease.
Scientific sessions will discuss protein metabolism, exercise, body composition and outcome, strategies to improve malnutrition and metabolic abnormalities in dialysis patients, new hormones (adiponectin, ghrelin, leptin, etc), inflammation, nutrition and cardiovascular complications, calcium and phosphorus metabolism, and other topics. Several well-known invited speakers will attend the congress: A. Ikizler, D. Attaix, J. Kopple, W. Mitch, T. Kilates, K. Kalantar Zadeh, D. Fouque, L. Cuppari, Y. Nishizawa, C. Zoccali, P. Stenvinkel, G. Remuzzi, G. Kaysen, F. Locatelli, C. Baigent, G. Bianchi, S. Shah, F. Schena, S. Massry, G. Barsotti, W. Hörl, B. Cianciaruso, X. Leverve, T. Niwa, W. Druml, G. Bellinghieri, N. De Santo, A. Heidland, and others.
Poster sessions will encourage discussion and interaction between specialties and give opportunities to several scientists to show the results of their research.
The Congress Center of Abano, near Padua, is the premier location for such a meeting, but a full day will be devoted to a scientific session in Venice, in the beautiful Renaissance Scuola Grande of S. Giovanni.
Based on the scientific program and the emphasis that will be placed on interaction among the participants, we feel confident that the scientific goals of the Society and the Congress will be achieved and that collaborations will be developed. Also, several social and cultural events, as well as pre- and post-congress tours, will be organized to ensure that you enjoy your stay during and after the congress.
We warmly welcome you in Venice and Padua!
