THE BIANNUAL CONGRESS of the International Society for Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRN&M) was held in Padua-Venice, June 19–23, 2004. Under the leadership of A.-M. Bernardi, G. Guarnieri, and G. Bucciante, more than 400 delegates, predominantly nephrologists and renal dietitians, gathered for a successful scientific program. The scientific program included guest lectures, symposium lectures, free communications, and poster sessions on several aspects of renal nutrition and metabolism: new hormones and inflammation, protein metabolism, exercise and nutrition to improve metabolic abnormalities, pharmacological therapy, cardiovascular complications, energy balance, and body composition. There were also symposia dedicated to carnitine and to enteral and parenteral nutritional support.

We are pleased to publish the entire Proceedings of this Congress in the January 2005 issue of the Journal of Renal Nutrition. This is the first JREN issue to circulate the entire Proceedings of the ISRN&M and is a result of the co-sponsorship that was established in 2002. We look forward to the continuation of this new tradition.

We would like to warmly thank all reviewers and authors whose work allowed a timely publication process.

Please plan to join us at the next meeting of the ISRN&M in Merida, Mexico, in March 2006.
