On behalf of the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism, we are delighted to invite all professionals in the field of renal nutrition, especially dietitians and nephrologists, to join us at the 13th Congress of the Society to be held in Merida, Mexico, February 28 to March 4, 2006.
Since the first congress held in Wurzburg, Germany in 1977, this biannual congress has been unique in bringing together the science and practical aspects of nutritional management of renal disease, and there is a strong commitment to maintain this high scientific standard. This congress will be held for the first time in Latin America.
Under the chairmanship of Prof. Denis Fouque, President of the Society, and Prof. Alejandro Treviño, President of the Organizing Committee, the scientific committee has developed an exciting and comprehensive program. The two concurrent pre-conference courses/workshops on practical nutrition and skeletal muscle metabolism are just some of the highlights of the congress. The program encompasses the re-visit of some familiar topics as well as the most recent advances in the management in all stages of renal disease, including dialysis and transplantation. There is something for everybody: history of the society, prevention, risk factors, complications, therapeutics, clinical trials, and lots more. For the second time since the Padua-Venice meeting in 2004, all invited lectures will be published in the Journal of Renal Nutrition. The Scientific Program includes the participation of more than 50 International Scientific leaders in the field. There will be 16 lectures, 8 symposia, oral and poster communications in general, and specific dietitian sections. The Organizing Committee will arrange a special registration fee to participants from Latin American countries.
Renal physicians and dietitians are encouraged to submit abstracts for oral and/or poster presentations. As an increasing number of dietitians from different countries attend the congress, the dietitians subcommittee has arranged a “get to know each other” gathering early on in the congress over Mexican cuisine, which will be a social and educational event.
The congress will be held in Merida, “the white city,” capital of Yucatán and the largest town in the peninsula. The peninsula is located southeast of Mexico, surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea where Mayan culture prospered. Chichen Itzá, Uxmal, and Tulum are some of the world famous archaeological sites. The coast of Yucatán is 350 kilometers long and embraces beautiful beaches, allowing further discoveries after the scientific sessions close.
