Cookbooks for CKD Patients—2009 Update

Council on Renal Nutrition, National Kidney Foundation, New York, NY

Article Outline

WE ALL KNOW that nutrients fulfill a basic human need for survival. If we simply selected nutrients for endurance, then making choices would be relatively simple. In our society, food goes beyond fundamental needs and is interwoven into the culture of our families, communities, and celebrations. On a daily basis, we look to food to provide comfort and nurturing.

Chronic kidney disease impacts lifestyle choices in extraordinary ways. Individuals must alter their lifelong eating habits and adopt more restrictive dietary behaviors. However, chronic kidney disease does not need to be a life sentence of unimaginative meals and food choices. Good-tasting foods are the basis of health and well-being for all individuals. Sometimes we just need inspiration. The next time someone says, “I can't eat anything,” be prepared with a wealth of ideas to inspire creative and enticing meals.

The revised 2009 Renal Cookbook Update lists 24 cookbooks and Web-based resources filled with recipes sure to please anyone watching their intake of phosphorus, potassium, fluid, and sodium. This update makes available to individuals with chronic kidney disease, family members, and professionals a wealth of resources filled with practical food preparation advice and chronic kidney disease food choice guidelines. A brief description of each cookbook is provided to help select the resource best suited to an individual. If you think living on a renal diet means being limited to tiresome, tasteless foods, think again.

Thank you to the NKF Council on Renal Nutrition–Hudson Valley for volunteering to compile and maintain the 2009 Renal Cookbook Update.
