PATIENTS ON HEMODIALYSIS have an increased need for protein d/t losses occurred while on the dialysis machine and the catabolic state of End-Stage Renal Disease. The NKF KDOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition in Chronic Renal Failure state daily protein recommendations for CKD on HD are 1.2 gm/kg with at least 50% coming from high biological value protein sources. Patients who cannot consume an adequate amount of protein from foods may choose to supplement their intake with protein powders or protein liquids. The budgetary constrains on many patients also mandate that the most affordable supplements be recommended in order to encourage consistent use of the product.
